We also retook the terms test and while studying the terms a second time I realized that my reading level has improved so I was able to understand the passage allowing me to determine what term was being used. Whenever I watch a movie now I think about the message the director is trying to communicate. I was watching Shutter Island and I realized that it was really about how difficult it is for societies to classify people who are mentally disabled and how does a person actually know they are having delusions.

Response to Course Material #3
Recently in class we have done a lot of tone exercises. I have found it interesting how small the differences are between these different tones, but these small differences can alter the meaning of the passage considerably. We also watched the Death of a Salesman movie. As I was watching the movie, I would hear a specific line from one of the characters and immediately realize imagine the annotation I would write for that line. It seemed weird at first, but I realized that this meant the annotations were beginning to come more easily and I was understanding the movie on a deeper level than I'm used to.

I completely agree with your comment on the tone exercises! A lot of them are so similar, but their minor differences make a big impact on actual pieces of literature. One thing I would say to work on is spending more time on the big pieces we do. Talk more about impressions or connections or whatever comes to mind, but since those pieces are such a big part of the class, I think it's a good idea to spend some time really thinking about them. Although I do think it's good that annotations are coming easier for you; I wish the same were true for me. Also, in your part about messages in movies, maybe make a better connection to the class when you talk about it. Like, what part of the class do you think makes you do that now? Annotating? The reading from over the summer? I can definitely relate though!
ReplyDeleteHi Nathan,
ReplyDeleteI liked how you made specific connections, like what the director's message was in "Shutter Island". I definitely agree with the things you talked about, like the tone exercises, the DOS annotations, and the terms test retake. Along with Bri, I also think that you could respond more to DOS, as we have spent most of our time in the last couple of weeks talking about it during class. Maybe you could connect your movie experience of DOS with actually reading the play? Which one did you like better? Were the characters portrayed accurately in the movie? Is there a difference in watching the movie first or reading the play first? Overall, I think you a good job on this blog post!
I thought this was a good response, but maybe you want to write a little more about the different themes in DOS that we've discussed in class. I'm sure you have some interesting thoughts about those! After all, we did spend a majority of the time talking about the play in the past two weeks. I did like your personal connections to the movie and Shutter Island, and overall this was a good response.
